Baltic Radio Links
Lithuania
Lithuanian
Radio 1 (102.6 FM) - A highly
diverse channel of the state radio service: serious news,
talk, poetry readings, radio theater and much more. The music ranges
from classical to Lithuanian folk. At 21:00 and 23:30, Lithuanian
time, there are English-language news broadcasts; among Baltic state
radios, their English-language service seems to be the best.
M1Plius
(106.2 FM)- Regarded as one of the very
best pop stations in Lithuania.
M-1
(106.8 FM) - Pop,
alternative.
Radiocentras
(101.5 FM) - Pop,
techno.
Znad Wilii
(103.8 FM) - Polish-language radio, music
and news.
Radio
Free Europe Lithuanian Service -
News in Lithuanian from Prague, where the U.S. station's headquarters
are located.
Latvia
People in
Latvia, like Lithuania, tend to have a slightly broader taste in musicgiven
the larger population compared to Estonia.
Radio SWH
(105.2 FM) - a Riga favorite.
Pop (including a smattering of alternative rock and dance) and news on
the hour. Russian-language version of SWH+ (105.7 FM), here.
Radio
Amadeus (89.2
FM) - classical, New Age, jazz; a nice reprieve from sometimes
over-technoed Riga.
MixFM
(102.7) - middle-of-the-road pop to dance techno.
Radio Latvia
- Latvian state radio, with a whole range of news and
music programs; Radio Latvia One, Two or Three (Classical).

of various performances by the Latvian Radio Choir
Radio Pik
(100 FM) -
Russian-language radio.
Radio
Free Europe Latvian Service -
Latvian-language news from Prague to Latvia, from the U.S.-funded
Radio Free Europe.
Estonia
Many Estonian
pop stations shoot low. Music selection is often one-dimensional with an
emphasis on dance techno. There is little variety of stationswhich is
understandable given the smallness of the radio market. There are no
alternative-music stations to speak of.
Radio Kuku
- (100.7 FM) - Estonias No. 1 news radio station, with Estonian-language news
on
the hour and half-hour.
Also good news talk shows on the weekends. They also tend to play a
wider variety of music than most other stations.
Vikerraadio
(104.1 FM) -
Solid news from the state-owned Estonian
Radio, and also longer talk shows, including in the morning.
Eclectic
programming.
Estonian
Radio (103.5 FM) -
A variety of foreign-language broadcasts, including the BBC and
German radio. In the evening starting at 18:00 Estonian time, Finnish-,
English- and German-language news updates. Also
try Estonia Today,
archive of the English news program;
patchy quality overall; news reports often lack context and
are not by any means hard-hitting or critical.
Raadio
2 (101.6
FM) - lots of pop techno, and
Estonian-language news on the hour.
Raadio Elmar
(91.5 FM)-
Lots of Estonian folk/pop from the '60s. '70s,
'80ssometimes on the tacky side.www.elmar.ee
Klassikaraadio
(106.6 FM)- Classical.
Raadio 4
(94.5 FM) - Russian-language channel of state radio.

Estonian
Parliament - Live debate straight
from the floor of the Estonian legislaturewhen they are in session,
of course.
Radio
Uuno - Techno city: Scooterville.
Not
Baltic
BBC
World Service
- the most accessible world news around, though there are complaints
it's been dumbed down in recent years in order to reach an even wider
audience.
NPR
(America's National Public Radio)
- An excellent American alternative to the BBC, though more
U.S.-centered.
KDGE 94.5 Alternative Rock (Dallas) - CITY
PAPER: Is there a part of you that
makes you identify more closely with your American past than with
being Estonian? Estonian Foreign Minister Toomas Ilves: Alternative
rock and roll. (from CITY PAPER No. 43, November/December 1999)
